At Christopher Kids, every project tells a story—of hope, resilience, and the power of inclusive design. This summer, we’re proud to share the story of Lola Ruth, a joyful 7-year-old girl whose new bedroom is now a safe, comforting space tailored to her unique needs.
Adopted from Bulgaria in 2020, Lola Ruth was welcomed into a loving home. She has Down syndrome, is nonverbal and non-ambulatory, and due to developmental delays, functions at the level of a 6–9-month-old. She also faces ongoing challenges with epilepsy, which require heightened safety measures—particularly during sleep. When Christopher Kids first connected with her family, it was clear that a custom-designed, accessible bedroom could improve not just Lola Ruth’s quality of life, but also her family’s peace of mind. After months of planning, collaboration, and care, we were thrilled to complete Lola Ruth’s room in June, a project that began back in January. The centerpiece of her space is a specialized tented bed, custom-built to prevent falls and ensure her safety while she rests. This addition alone brought tremendous relief to her mom, who now has greater peace of mind knowing Lola Ruth is secure through the night. But the transformation didn’t stop there. We also addressed critical needs in her bathroom by replacing the existing bathtub with shelving, giving her mom ample space to store essential medical equipment in a clean, organized way. These thoughtful touches not only make daily routines more manageable, but also reflect our commitment to supporting caregivers as well as the children we serve. Reflecting on the impact of the project, Lola Ruth’s mom shared: “Our lives are already medically complicated enough, and now her room doesn’t need to look or feel medically complicated. We are so grateful!” Projects like Lola Ruth’s are at the heart of our mission. At Christopher Kids, we believe every child deserves a space that empowers them to feel safe, nurtured, and inspired—no matter their ability level or medical needs. We are deeply grateful to our supporters, whose generosity allows us to continue creating spaces of joy, safety, and accessibility for the incredible children we serve! |
